Understanding Obesity

Obesity Canada is a non profit organization and their mission is to improve the lives of Canadians living with obesity. One of their goals is to address the stigma associated with obesity.

Here are a few interesting facts about obesity that you may not be aware of.

  1. Obesity is a complex, chronic condition that affects millions of Canadians. It is not a personal failure or lack of willpower. It stems from complex interactions between biological, genetic and environmental factors.

  2. Obesity is not a choice. It is driven by biology.  70% of the risk is determined by genetics. In people with obesity, the brain's systems for controlling hunger and energy are flawed, creating barriers to weight loss that are difficult to overcome.

  3. Obesity is treatable. Effective obesity care is individualized. A one size fits all approach doesn't work.  There are new and more effective ways to manage obesity now, however weight loss should not be the only measure of success. Improving health and quality of life are also important. Behavioural therapy and lifestyle adjustments can play a role in a personalized approach to care.

  4. Studies show that fear of judgement causes many people living with obesity to avoid seeking medical help and treatment. Respecting people of all sizes and being non-judgemental is the first step to eliminating bias.
